The three kinds of demo tools #
1. Screen recorders #
You press record, present the product yourself and talk over it. The result feels personal and is quick for a one-off message to a colleague or customer.
Good for: async updates, bug reports, personal walkthroughs, anything where your face and voice are the point.
Trade-offs: the video is only as smooth as your take. Mistakes mean re-recording, loading spinners stay in unless you edit them out, and when the UI changes the video is outdated and has to be redone by hand.
2. Interactive click-through demos #
These capture screenshots or HTML of your app and stitch them into a guided tour that viewers click through themselves, usually embedded on a website.
Good for: self-guided product tours on landing pages, where viewers want to explore at their own pace.
Trade-offs: they aren't videos, so they don't play in places that expect video (social feeds, YouTube, release emails, LinkedIn). Building a tour still means capturing each step yourself, and updating it when the UI changes.
3. AI-performed demo videos (DemoReady) #
You describe the story, or let your AI coding agent decide, and software performs the demo in a real browser with directed cursor motion, captions, spotlights and voice-over, then renders a finished video.
Good for: launch and release videos, landing page videos, onboarding and help clips, and demos you need to keep up to date as the product changes.
Trade-offs: it performs your app rather than presenting it, so it's less personal than a recording of you talking. It runs against a real environment, so you need test accounts and demo data. It produces a video, not a clickable tour.
Side-by-side #
| Screen recorder | Interactive demo | AI-performed video | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output | Video | Click-through tour | Video (1080p MP4) |
| Who performs the demo | You | Viewer clicks captured steps | Software, from a script |
| Retakes when you make a mistake | Re-record | Re-capture the step | Not needed |
| Updating after a UI change | Re-record by hand | Re-capture steps | Re-run the script |
| Voice-over | Your voice | Usually text only | Generated, 7 voices |
| Dead time (loading, typing) | Edit it out | N/A | Cut automatically |
| Works in social, email, YouTube | Yes | Usually as a link | Yes |

Which should you use? #
- Talking to one person, right now? Use a screen recorder.
- Want visitors to click around on your site? Use an interactive demo.
- Need polished videos that stay current for launches, your homepage, docs and sales, made in minutes and re-made whenever the product changes? That's what DemoReady is for.
Many teams use more than one. A common mix is an AI-performed video above the fold, with a personal screen recording for sales follow-ups.
